SUMMARY:Engineered Living Materials for the Built Environment Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Engineered Living Materials for the Built Environment Exhibition. Engineered Living Materials is an exciting area of study combining engineered microbes in polymeric materials using additive manufacturing (3D printing). Based on cutting-edge\, NSF-funded Engineered Living Material (ELM) research that integrates synthetic biology with polymer science\, graduate students in Architecture envision how this new material category could be integrated into buildings and cities of the future. The interdisciplinary work combines material science\, computational design\, 3D-printed material samples\, and design projects that leverage the potential of these innovative materials. \nThis work is part of an NSF EFRI ELiS research grant at the University of Washington\, led by Professor Nelson\, Chemistry\, in collaboration with Professor Olánrewájú\, Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering\, Professor Proksch\, Architecture\, and researchers at the University of Texas at Austin\nand the University of California Davis (https://elis.be.uw.edu/).
